Bulgaria is located on the Balkan Peninsula in southeastern Europe (in the period between 1946 and 1990 the country was named People's Republic of Bulgaria).
Bulgaria has common borders with five countries. In the north the Danube forms the border with Romania, to the south Bulgaria is bordered by Turkey and Greece, and to the west by Serbia and the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia. To the east lies the Black Sea.
