Sveti Vlas
Sveti Vlas is one of the newest resorts in Bulgaria, which in recent years successfully competes with the noisy and crowded nearby resort of Sunny Beach. The town is located 45 min. drive from the international airport in Burgas (41.5 km), 20 min. drive from the Old Town of Nessebar (10.4 km) and only 9 min. drive from the resort Sunny Beach (5 km).
It is believed that Sveti Vlas was founded on the site of an ancient settlement founded by the Thracians in the II century BC, and according to some historical evidence was originally named Larissa. The town was renamed Sveti Vlas in the XIV century AD in honor of Veles, patron of shepherds and merchants. Legends tell of the saint's persecutions and tortures to which he was subjected for refusing to renounce his faith.
During the Ottoman expansion, the settlement was called "Kuchuk monastery" because of its proximity to a number of monasteries. Unfortunately, they were all destroyed or abandoned in the late eighteenth century. The only surviving monastery churches are Vlaherna and St. Andrew, which together with the many sketes turned the area surrounding the town into an important artistic center. Today, Saint Vlas is famous for the restored church "St. Athanasius the Great", built in 1864-65.
Located at the foot of the eastern part of Stara Planina Mountain Range and on coast of the Black Sea the town enjoys a cocktail of sea and mountain air which is quite beneficial for the treatment of respiratory diseases. This is the only place in the region where air currents between the sea and the mountains are effectively saturated with iodine ions. It is exactly that the content of the natural marine aerosol in the air that has a positive effect on patients with asthma and other lung diseases and creates the reputation of Sveti Vlas of excellent spa resort.
The coastline of the resort is facing south and is a natural riviera with numerous small bays suitable for bathing. The entire coast is divided into three distinct beaches with fine golden sand. The biggest of them - Central Beach - has a length of about a kilometer and a width of about 16 meters.
The southern exposure on the coast of St. Vlas offers spectacular views of the ancient city of Nessebar where you can go for a walk by the sea. Under the influence of nearby Sunny Beach, which is increasingly growing in the direction of Sveti Vlas, the town became a modern resort with many restaurants and entertainment venues. But unlike its noisy neighbor, it has the cozy atmosphere of a quiet resort, ideal for family holidays.
